Maternity Contract Awarded

Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning group has awarded the Royal United Hospital Bath the contract to run maternity services at the hospital’s Princess Anne Wing and community maternity services in Chippenham, Trowbridge, Frome, Shepton Mallet and Paulton.

RUH will be responsible for providing these services, currently provided by Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, from June 2014 until 2017.

The procurement process to appoint a new provider was shared between four Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), with Wiltshire CCG taking the lead role.  This culminated in the detailed evaluation of two submissions by a panel, made up of specialists and clinicians. The governing bodies of all four CCGs have subsequently ratified the recommendation.

The decision to award the contract between two reputable Trusts was a difficult one and both Trusts set out their strengths and capabilities in their submissions. The final decision was not linked to cost, nor did it require any change or reduction in existing services to patients. Staff affected by this change will all remain within NHS employment and retain their terms and conditions.

In the coming months Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal United Hospital will be working together closely, to ensure that patient continue to experience high standards of care and support and that staff are supported through the transfer process to a new NHS employer.
